In 2012, the College of Fine Arts Development Office and the Department of Art & Art History collaborated with Zia Trust to set up the The Howard L. Franks Memorial Studio Art Fellowship. This fellowship will be awarded to three or more Art Studio MFA students each year, as funds permit.

Eligibility

MFA Art Studio students in good standing, who have demonstrated academic excellence, and who intend to make a career in the arts, are eligible to apply for this award. Students in their first and second years of the program are eligible to apply. Students who will be past their 6th semester during the award period are no longer eligible. Awards will be granted annually, on a competitive basis. Financial need will be taken into account, but is not the sole determiner of this award.

Three or more awards will be given per year, of approximately $10,000 per award. Awards may be granted either as assistantships, or as scholarships, at the discretion of the Department of Art & Art History. Awards are renewable, competitively, by re-application, for up to three years.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a completed application to the Department of Art & Art History Graduate Office no later than March 31st. Applications will be accepted from December 1st through March 31st. Late materials will not be accepted. Incoming students in the MFA program are eligible to apply.

The Department Chair, Associate Chair & Graduate Director will collaborate in reviewing the applications and selecting awardees. The list of recommended awardees will be approved by the Dean of the College. A slate of the reccomended awardees, and their applications, will be presented to the Trustees.

Awardees will be announced in April. Award announcements will coincide with the Graduate Juried Art Show. Trustees will be invited to attend the Graduate Juried Art Show.

All awardees must participate in a required meeting with the Trustees each semester, in December and April. Awardees must satisfy the Trustees that they are deserving of the award, and that the trust money is well-spent, and has an educational and artistic benefit for the student.
