In Memory of Professor David Lee Craven
David Lee Craven, 60, of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, of an apparent heart attack. David was a man of letters and a champion for social causes, beloved by all who knew him for his keen intellect, genuine sense of compassion and desire to help others. Recognized by his peers as one of the most informed and incisive art historians in the world, David's immense knowledge and the publication of 10 books and more than 150 articles that have appeared in 25 different countries and translated into 15 different languages led to his recognition as a world authority in the fields of 20th Century Art from Latin America, Post-1945 Art from the USA and Critical Theory, as well as Philosophy of Methods in Art History & Visual Culture. read more >
UNM to Host the 18th International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012
The Eighteenth International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness is a symposium and series of events exploring the discourse of global proportions on the subject of art, technology and nature. The ISEA symposium is held every year in a different location around the world, and has a 30-year history of significant acclaim. Albuquerque is the first host city in the U.S. in six years. read more >
INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN ISEA2012?
International Art Practicum: ISEA2012: Machine Wilderness ARTS 389/429/529.003 will be offered Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Art Building Room 350 the first eight weeks of the Fall 2012 semester (August 20- October 13, including September 22-23). This course will give students the chance to participate in the 18th International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA2012). This symposium will bring over 500 local, national, and international professional artists to exhibit and present their work. The course is taught by the symposium's artistic director, Andrea Polli, and students will have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge directly from the symposium organizers and artists, participate in workshops and conference sessions, and respond to the contemporary trends represented in the symposium through writing, media and other art production. In addition to scheduled class times, students will be required to attend the symposium September 21-23, 2012.
Wyeth Pre-doctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum awarded to Shana Klein
We are proud to announce that Shana Klein, a PhD candidate in the Art and Art History Department, received the prestigious Wyeth Pre-doctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in recognition of her dissertation "The Fruits of Empire: Contextualizing Food in Still Life Representation, 1850-1900."

Dave Hickey Join the Department of Art & Art History Dave Hickey,
the celebrated art critic and author, has been made Distinguished
Professor of Criticism for the MFA Program in the Department
of Art & Art History at the University of New Mexico beginning
in the Fall of 2010. A broad-ranging person of letters, Hickey has
written several books, such as, Invisible Dragon
and Air Guitar, which have now assumed almost
legendary status in the artworld. read

History and Criticism in the Department of Art & Art
History at the University of New Mexico starting in the Fall of 2010.
