Michael Schultze (b. 1988) is a painter and printmaker who lives and works in Albuquerque, NM.
For this series of Lithographs, I began by cutting paper and tracing the shapes onto a drawing surface to create a composition which feels whole. The shapes are filled in or shaded to balance value in the composition and later transferred to a Lithography plate or stone. The printmaking process acts as an intermediary between the highly rendered drawing and the playful color forms. I imagine the color as graffiti over architecture which can act as a negation to the structure or enhance its form. Throughout this process I encourage myself to be playful within the work, to allow myself accidents, and to observe and articulate intuition through color and mark making.
