Associate Professor, Experimental Art & Technology
Lee Montgomery has a BA in Film from Bard College, and an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has had numerous shows and residencies in the US and internationally with the collaborative project Neighborhood Public Radio (NPR) which he founded in 2004. Other shows include: The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Santa Barbara Contemporary Art Forum, The Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, The Novi Sad Museum of Contemporary Art in Serbia and the 2008 Whitney Biennial where NPR staged a 3 month long storefront radio station on the upper east side of New York.
Lee has worked on collaborative projects where he frequently includes his students, such as “Albuquerque – Oslo Hole in Space” where he worked with students in Oslo and in Albuquerque to create a live networked video performance using Skype. “Constellations of the City” was a collaboration with his students to draw forms in a landscape using a drone and time lapse photography.
Lee’s other solo projects feature experiments with appropriation, drones, video and audio synthesis, circuit bending, creative coding, and audio and video transmission. His year long “Evading the Stupidity Tax” project sought to humorously use data visualization and analysis to examine the place of state supported lotteries in our culture. He is currently building thermal cameras into unused Polaroid cameras and appropriating Star Wars videos.
