Assistant Professor, Art Education
Dr. Jeff Horwat is an artist, teacher, and researcher from Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Jeff earned his Bachelor of Science in Art Education at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and later received a Master of Science in Art Education at Massachusetts College of Art & Design and a Doctorate in Art Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has taught visual art in both K-12 and higher education settings for over 15 years—teaching art to students in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Massachusetts, Illinois, Indiana, and New Mexico. Prior to his current appointment at the University of New Mexico, he was an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University South Bend where he coordinated of the art education program.
Jeff’s research interests include art teacher identity, critical pedagogy, psychoanalytic theory, affect theory, and arts-based research methodologies. His current art and research practice explores the intersections of wordless narratives, social theory, and arts-based research. He regularly presents scholarship at conferences such as those sponsored by the National Art Education Association, the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, and the New Mexico Art Education Association. He has exhibited artwork in Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Hartford, Louisville, Urbana-Champaign, and Sacramento, and publishes scholarship in journals such as Visual Art Research, Art Research International, and the Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies. Jeff published his first monograph in 2023, a wordless research novel ‘Nothing is a Cure’.
