The Center for the Study of Childhood Art is an interdisciplinary research, teaching and community engagement center affiliated with the Art Education program in the School of Art at University of Arkansas.

Through dynamic educational programs, community-facing initiatives, and an innovative research agenda, CSCA is committed to:

challenging perspectives that disempower children, decontextualize their lives, and delegitimize their creative practices.

documenting, preserving, and sharing the artistic, play-based, and aesthetic practices of children.

reconceptualizing the study of children’s art and its relationship to historical and contemporary childhoods.

creating equitable and inclusive programs for young people to experience the educative promise of the visual arts.

The Center for the Study of Childhood Art serves as the organizational hub for a range of innovative research, teaching, and community-facing programs, including the Childhood Art Speaker Series; The Sketch Pad; Childhood Art: A CSCA Podcast; The CSCA Annual Awards Program; and the Internship in Childhood Art. The Center for the Study of Childhood Art is also developing additional initiatives and programs, including Childhood Art: An International Journal of Research, hosted by University of Arkansas Press, the Childhood Art Study Group, an annual gathering of leading scholar-practitioners focused on addressing key issues and cutting edge ideas related to the study and practice of childhood art; the Childhood Art Archives, a physical and digital archive committed to documenting, preserving, and sharing the artistic, play-based, and aesthetic practices of children; and a dedicated office and study space, to be housed in the newly renovated Fine Arts Building on University of Arkansas’ Fayetteville campus.
