Overlooked & Underappreciated
March 22 @ 10:00 am - March 24 @ 5:00 pm
Our Center for Environmental Arts and Humanities (CEAH) will be participating in the 13th Annual Las Cruces Arts Fair this weekend, March 22-24, 2024.
“Overlooked & Underappreciated” is a part of the “Looking to the Mountain: Sacred Lands, Healing Cultures” programming of the Gila Ancestral Homelands initiative and presented at the 13th Annual Las Cruces Arts Fair organized by the Doña Ana Arts Council. The statewide Gila Ancestral Homelands initiative is organized by Professor Michelle Hall Kells of the University of New Mexico (UNM).
“Overlooked & Underappreciated” is co-created by Leila Chapa and Paloma Chapa, undergraduate students at UNM, with mentorship from Professor Subhankar Banerjee, and produced by the UNM Center for Environmental Arts and Humanities in the Department of Art: Studio, History, Education. The exhibit includes 12 postcards created by Leila Chapa and Paloma Chapa.
Leila Chapa’s Elegant Trogon, 2024 (featured), is one of the postcards in the exhibit, a pathbreaking work of environmental visual culture that includes a heartrending narrative on back of the postcard. All 12 postcards by Leila and Paloma are of immense significance as we work toward shaping a more-just biodiversity conservation policy for New Mexico.
