Teresa Eckmann, UNM PhD Art History alumna, studied under emerita Associate Professor of Chicano Art, Holly Barnet Sánchez. Currently serving as Associate Professor of Contemporary Latin American Art at UT San Antonio, Eckmann has recently released her second book titled “Julio Galán: The Art of Performative Transgression” published by UNM Press. In this publication, Eckmann explores Julio Galán’s complex production and artistic process.

This course provides direct experience of exploring basic printmaking processes, including relief, intaglio, and monoprint processes, as well as the investigation of materials/media, tools, techniques, history, and concepts of printmaking. Emphasis is given to solving problems through thematic devel-opment while producing a portfolio of prints. Prerequisite: 1610.

516 ARTS and the New Mexico State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (New Mexico Women in the Arts/NMC) present New Worlds: New Mexico Women to Watch 2024. Guest curated by Nancy Zastudil, the exhibition features New Mexico-based artists Nikesha Breeze, Art & Ecology Professor Szu-Han Ho, Eliza Naranjo Morse, Jennifer Nehrbass, and Rose B. Simpson. New Worlds acts as a site for embracing individual and communal positions of power and personhood, with an eye toward what’s next. The exhibition features a diverse range of mediums including sculpture, painting, multimedia installations, and lithography.

Congratulations to Art History alumna, Suzanne McL

Congratulations to Art History alumna, Suzanne McLeod, Ph.D., who was invited to present her work in progress at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome on June 18, 2024 ✨

Her talk will address what is believed to be the earliest depiction of Native Americans in European art. The images are found in a painting titled, “The Resurrection” (1494) by the Italian artist, Pinturicchio.

Suzanne, who is Anishinaabe-ikwe and a member of the Sagkeeng First Nation Manitoba, Canada, completed her dissertation in spring 2020 at UNM under the direction of Professor Ray Hernández-Durán. Her dissertation, which examines encounters between the Spanish and Northwest Coast Native communities in the 18th century, was awarded the prestigious Thomas J. Popejoy Dissertation Award in 2023. Suzanne is currently an Assistant Professor of Art History in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba in Canada.
